UCA Statement on George Floyd Murder Verdict

United Chinese Americans (UCA) applauds the guilty verdict against the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found directly responsible for the killing of George Floyd.

Although Floyd can no longer live with us today, we commend the jury for the verdict, and we share this unique moment of relief, closure and justice with Floyd’s family members and loved ones.

The murder of George Floyd once again commands us that we must carry out police reform and start changing certain police culture in order to nurture true peace among our communities. It also highlights the grave fact that race relations in 21st century America will remain an enormous societal and political challenge with every citizen of this great country.

Representing an ethnic minority itself, UCA calls for all Americans to come together to carry out an honest, sustained and perhaps painful dialogue, without resorting to finger-pointing at each other but with each fellow American asking themselves: “What more can I do to make America a successful multi-ethnic democracy?” This is also the best way to honor the death of George Floyd.

Martin Luther King Jr. once famously said that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. With this trial and conviction in Minneapolis, we have renewed our hope that our checkered moral history has and will continue to bend toward justice for all.

CW Chan, Nancy Chen, Jan Zheng, Lily Chen,  Grace Chan, David Wu, Anne Shaw and  Darryl Tom

我们的目的是通过反对给立法者压力去修改法案to be more inclusive of other Asian History including Chinese American history .

Upcoming Free Online Bystander Training to Stop Anti-Asian/American and Xenophobic Harassment

Almost all the registrants (96%) of our self-defense training indicated that they want to learn how to deal with anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents.

Thankfully, Hollaback is hosting several upcoming free online bystander training: “The one-hour, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!’s 5D’s of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Anti-Asian/American harassment online or in-person.”

Please register at their website: https://www.ihollaback.org/bystanderintervention/

Self-Defense and Empowerment Training – Recording Now Online

On the afternoon of Saturday, April 3, UCA and CAFA co-hosted a virtual Self-Defense and Empowerment Training featuring instructor Mary Amato. Mary is a second-degree black belt in karate and a seasoned self-defense instructor, having taught people of all ages. She demonstrated important self-defense techniques, including breaking out of chokeholds, using one’s own strong areas such as the palms, elbows, knees, and feet to defend oneself, and targeting weaker areas on the attacker’s body (eyes, diaphragm, and groin, as well as temples, kidneys, knees). She also answered all of the audience’s concerns graciously and comprehensively throughout the session, moderated by UCA WAVES Youth Ambassador Jennifer Tu. Afterwards, Mary and UCA WAVES consulting psychiatrist Dr. Sen Xu stayed for a Q&A, during which participants got to learn more about coping with anti-racism and applying self-defense techniques in real life.

After the webinar, Mary said, “Thank you all so much for giving me this opportunity. I am honored to be able to be a part of something so great.” As a UCA community, we are also honored and grateful for her humility, empathy, and generosity, as well as that of the team who organized the event.

For more ways to combat anti-Asian racism, please visit our compilation of online resources.

Please see our report of aggregate data collected from the event pre-survey here.

Some striking notes:

  • A total of 322 people from 29 states registered for the session, of whom a total of 193 (60% of total registered) attended. Majority of them are females (83%) and most are parents (79%).
  • At least 16% of them have experienced race-targeted harassment and/or assault in the past year, including verbal assault, physical attacks, etc.
  • However, only less than 10% of them reported the incidents. Multiple factors contributed to the low level of reports. About 42% of them didn’t think that police would help them. Others didn’t know how to report, were afraid of retaliations by the perpetrators, or had English language barriers.

Conclusive remarks:
The registration survey results indicate that the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes and racially targeted assaults and attacks have negatively impacted our community’s well being. Although a convenient sample was used in the survey analysis and the results reported herein need to be interpreted with caution, the general findings are consistent with other reports on similar issues. There is an urgency to unite and mobilize our community members to stand up and speak out against any forms of racism, bigotry, and xenophobia. As a community grassroot organization, UCA can play an important role in supporting local Chinese and Asian American organizations’ effort in fighting racism and discrimination and promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity.

UCA’s Work Featured in Atlanta Journal-Constitution After Atlanta Shooting

Click here to read, on page 11

Today, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a highly esteemed American newspaper, published an article by our UCA member Lily Chen (陈健). In the article, Lily introduces her life and work as a U.S. citizen and community member, and denounces the current acts of hate and violence towards Asians. Thank you and congratulations to Chen Jian and other members for speaking out for our Asian community!

Many other members of our UCA community are also actively writing their testimonials and contributing articles to local newspapers. In case you are interested: the “Letters to the Editor” (“Letters to the Editor”) and “Op Ed” (“Reader Comments”) of American newspapers are reserved pages. These two columns are places for readers to comment on current affairs and express their opinions, and they are a good platform for discourse.

Using it to introduce ourselves in local newspapers and participate in discussions is a very effective way to make waves in mainstream society.

In order to cooperate with this work, UCA is organizing an upcoming webinar, where we will invite experts and community representatives in this area to guide us on how to write such manuscripts and deliver them to local media.

This is an article published by Lily in AJC (please visit page 11): here
