On February 12, 2022, an unusually sunny and warm day in Seattle, against the backdrop of national campaign against Asian hate, nearly one thousand Chinese community members gathered at Hing Hay Park in Chinatown to join the Chinese Expulsion Remembrance Rally and March, in commemoration of the 1886 Seattle Riot against Chinese residents.
The 1886 Seattle riot took place from February 6th to 9th, when angry mobs forced more than 300 Chinese families to board ships for San Francisco, killing several Chinese during the riot, destroying and robbing them of everything they have. Elected officials from all levels of government came to the memorial event and spoke out against this ugly episode in Seattle’s history, emphasizing the need for Washington state today to build a truly diverse and inclusive city that must not allow this history to repeat itself today. Officials in attendance included former Ambassador to China and former Governor Gary Locke, U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, King County executive Dow Constantine, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz, former Seattle Deputy Mayor Mike Fong, Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson, and former Bellevue Mayor Conrad Lee and others.
In his closing remarks, Haipei Shue, national President of United Chinese Americans (UCA), recalled the discrimination and violence against the Chinese people, especially after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. “Today, a new brand of racism and nationalism is on the rise, Asian hatred is prevalent, and mistrust of Chinese and Asian Americans is on full display,” Mr. Shue said. “If we do not remain vigilant, history may certainly repeat itself. We simply cannot allow this ugly history of the past to return to our city, our state and our nation. Never again!”
After the speeches, UCA Washington Chapter President Winston Lee called the march to begin. The community marchers retraced the same route that their ancestors took when they were violently driven out of Seattle, holding banners, signs, and chanting slogans. Notable among the participating groups are Olympia Area Chinese Association and the Bellingham Northwest Chinese Cultural Fellowship, community representatives from Spokane, Tacoma, and many more[a]. The Seattle Police Department led the way for the parade and escorted the crowd all the way until everyone returned to Chinatown.

2022 UCA “Concert in the Cloud” “Bukaopu” Lunar New Year Online Gala and North American Talent Show Contest Award Ceremony will be broadcasted live 5pm-8pm PST (8pm-11pm EST) on February 12, 2022 (Sat) through a multicast platform. This charity event is cohosted by UCA, Ding Ding TV and “Bukaopu” Artists Salon. More than a hundred local Chinese American community organizations and media companies joined as partners to help promoting the event. Money raised by the event will be used to fund UCA’s Community Fund, which will provide “micro grants” to charity projects sponsored by local Chinese American community organizations through a simple application and fast approval process.
Sponsors of the event have contributed more than $30,000 worth of gifts and NFTs for auction and lucky draw during the show, including COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Kit from iHealth, limited editions of NFTs issued by Melos Studio, red wine, painting, art works, books, free online Chinese classes, etc. Anyone who registers online for the raffle draw before the show will have the chance to win an NFT. The show will be composed of winning acts of the North American Talent Show Contest. The contest prizes include the Best Act of the Year (1 winner, $3K), Best Musical Act (1 winner, $1K), Best Dance Act (1 winner, $1K), Best Singer (male) (1 winner, $500), Best Singer (female) (1 winner, $500), Best Variety Act (Including but not limited to Magic, Juggling, Acrobatics and any other form of performance art, 1 winner, $500) and Chinese Culture Award (3 winners, $500 each). The winners will be selected by our panel of judges based on their scores in five categories, originality, artistic merit, technical prowess, presentation, and representation of Chinese culture. The names of the award winners will be announced on Feb 12, 2022, and the winners’ prizes and certificates will be mailed out to the winners no later than Feb 20, 2022. All participants of the contest will receive participation certificates and NFTs issued by Melos Studio.
“UCA is a national coalition that advocates and advances the welling being and interests of Chinese Americans through civic participation and community building. We embrace and celebrate Chinese American heritage, culture, identity and way of life. To celebrate the Spring Festival of the Year of the Tiger, UCA headquarter, local branches and community partners have specially arranged a number of festival activities across the nation. United Chinese Americans
The United Chinese Americans (UCA) is a coalition of grass-root community organizations dedicated to the enrichment and empowerment of the Chinese American community in the United States. UCA was formed at the first Chinese American Convention in September 2016 and was later incorporated and received IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2017. UCA has since grown into a national federation of 12 local chapters in Atlanta, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, New York City and San Francisco and over 30 community partners nationwide.
Bukaopu Salon
“Bukaopu” is a variety arts salon encompassing all forms of performing arts such as music, dance, magic, juggling, and many others. The spirit of “Bukaopu” encourages the exploration into the unknown; the artists of the Bukaopu collective embraces interaction with the audience to sparkle new possibilities in their performance, creating unique content in “Bukaopu” style in every show and bringing moments of surprise and joy to the audience. In the last 10 years since its inception, “Bukaopu Salon” has held countless events in many locations under different themes, bringing joy and entertainment to it’s growing fan base.

Founded in 2009, has been the Voice of Silicon Valley Asian Americans, the bridge for National AAPI communities, the hub for global entrepreneurs through media and events. Ding Ding TV is the organizer of quarterly Civic Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, Annually Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs Festival since 2016. Ding Ding TV has created millions of internet contents Promoting Cultural Interconnectivity through appreciation of similarities and understanding differences and Encouraging Awareness of civic responsibilities and engaged citizens.

很荣幸这次能有机会跟UCA合作，通过DingDingTV的平台，用我们“不靠谱”的方式和在北美以及全球的华人同胞们一起共度新春佳节。在中国，春节就像在美国过圣诞节（甚至可能会更加隆重）。圣诞节自从公元336年被教皇朱利叶斯一世发明出来之后随着基督教的普及逐渐传遍了全球，成为了当今在世界上大部分发达国家都会庆祝的重要节日，至今已有1686年的历史。而公元前2637黄帝发明的春节流传至今4659年，却还没有在美国这片土地上发扬光大。我们很荣幸可以参与到这项伟大的文化交流工程：把我们的饺子，鞭炮，春联，红包等有趣的传统，借用音乐，舞蹈，武幻，魔术等玩法将其分享给更多地方的人。

大家好，天籁云端春节联欢的组织团队和志愿者们非常感谢大家对这个活动的关注和支持！今年的天籁云端晚会不仅是2022年2月12日一天的节日庆祝，还是一个北美华人才艺大赛的颁奖联欢，把选自北美华人社区的精彩节目呈现给观众们。

张科民，加拿大籍华裔音乐人/魔术师，出生于音乐世家。自2004年起，张科民以魔术师、魔术指导，魔术顾问等身份，参与录制央视《魔术训练营》及《我爱满堂彩》、湖南卫视《魔术群英会》、江苏卫视《超凡魔术师》等多档电视节目。2011年，他参与创作的魔术音乐剧《王牌游戏》，荣获当年中国东莞音乐剧节“最佳制作奖”和“最受观众喜爱奖”。2018年，他参与编剧并主演了引进美国外百老汇的《物理秀》（That Physics Show) 中文版，并为其谱写主题歌，受到了国内外业内人士的以及观众的好评。同年国庆期间，他在亚洲首场万人多媒体大型魔术秀《梦幻海上》中担任艺术总监。10年前，他成立的“不靠谱沙龙”，结合魔术与音乐等其他艺术形式在北京各种场所进行文化交流和演出；如今，“不靠谱线上“已成为一个全球性文艺爱好者们聚会和交流的平台。

An original composition by Yi Yang from China, this “Conversation Across the Distance” features a young couple playing together across over 10000 km. This french horn and flute duet tell the real life love story of Tao Zhang (french horn) and his wife Amanda (flute), who have been separated due to an unfortunate turn of events since the pandemic. Due to travel restrictions, the couple has spent almost two years being apart. Amanda and their daughter Rory are living in New York while Tao has been watching his baby grow up on zoom from Beijing. The music has become an expression of their longing for each other and captures the bitter-sweet memories of days when they were together. As Amanda said at the beginning of the piece, we hope they can reunite as a family this year!

The United Chinese Americans (UCA) is a coalition of grass-roots community organizations dedicated to the enrichment and empowerment of the Chinese American community in the United States. UCA was formed at the first Chinese American Convention in September 2016 and was later incorporated and received IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2017. UCA has since grown into a national federation of 12 local chapters in Atlanta, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, New York City and San Francisco and over 30 community partners nationwide.

United Chinese Americans (UCA) commends the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to drop all criminal charges against Dr. Gang Chen, a Chinese American professor at MIT, and yet another victim of the China Initiative. Although Dr. Chen was accused of his relationship with China, in essence he was questioned for his loyalty to America. We believe the DOJ’s decision to drop the case, though long overdue, is right and applaudable. We are happy for Professor Chen’s family and many who care about him and this case.
Professor Chen, like many other professors of Chinese or non-Chinese descent, should not be charged under the China Initiative in the first place, simply because he did not do anything wrong. The DOJ’s China Initiative was set up to catch spies and stop illicit technology transfer or theft of trade secrets. However, in its nearly three years’ operation, the federal law enforcement under the China Initiative has investigated hundreds of Chinese American professors and academics primarily based on their relationship with China, and arrested and charged scores of them by criminalizing what is essentially research integrity or disclosure issues. These issues were in the past administratively dealt with by granting agencies and universities involved. The China Initiative has not only caused fear and chilling effect among the Chinese American academic community but also poisoned America’s research environment, diminishing America’s ability to attract or retain the scientific talents this country desperately needs.
American system of law should never be conveniently exploited or mercilessly abused as such. Selective or overzealous prosecutions under the China Initiative amount to persecutions, which are the antithesis of America’s vaunted rule of law. This is truly Un-American.
UCA has been at the forefront fighting for the civil rights of Chinese Americans ever since the cases of Sherry Chen and Xiaoxing Xi broke out about 7 years ago. UCA calls on the DOJ to continue on the right path and immediately stop prosecuting any and all professors and academics who are charged with research integrity issues alone. Terminate the China Initiative!
The U.S. Department of Justice’s “China Initiative” runs into serious trouble and is in for an imminent review by the DOJ and the White House, due to the growing outrage and mounting pressure from the academics, civil rights organizations, Chinese American community, members of Congress, and many disillusioned law enforcement professionals. UCA organized a “Day of Action” to put more pressure on the federal government to take immediate action to end the infamous program.
On Wednesday, January 12, 2022, a dead cold winter day, scores of local Chinese community members in the D.C. area gathered outside DOJ’s main office building, protesting the mistreatment of Chinese American scientists by the federal law enforcement, and demanding that DOJ end its 3-year-old China Initiative. The event was reported by numerous media outlets including Fox News, AP, and Yahoo News. Here is Fox News coverage:

Carrying the portraits of 9 victims–from Dr. Wen Ho Lee over two decades ago to Dr. Aiming Hu against whom the government’s case fell apart recently–and shouting “Chinese Americans are Americans,” “Science is Global,” “Stop Profiling Chinese Americans,” “Salute the Contributions of Chinese American Scientists,” and “End the China Initiative,” the Chinese community protesters have made the federal government hear their voice and demand.
Later on the same day, more than 120 people, including reporters from AP, Mother Jones, New Yorker, Science Magazine, and Times Higher Education, among other media outlets, joined the “UCA Press Conference for the Victims of the DOJ’s China Initiative.” Here is the recording of the online press conference:

UCA President Haipei Shue delivered the opening remarks for the special event that marked the largest gathering in a single session of so many victims and witnesses of the China Initiative. Mr. Shue praised them for their courage to speak up against the government despite lingering fear. Congresswoman Judy Chu and Congressman Ted Lieu each gave a powerful speech demanding the government stop racial profiling and treat Chinese Americans equally. They were followed by talks from three individuals involved in their different roles in the recent “Dr. Anming Hu case”: Phil Lomonaco, the defense lawyer, Jamie Satterfield, a reporter for local Knoxville News, and Wendy Chandler, a member of jury. They all shared their personal thoughts on the trial and the China Initiative. Ms. Chandler in particular found the government case “the most ridiculous.” Two victims of the China Initiative, Dr. Anming Hu, professor at University of Tennessee, and Dr. Qing Wang, former senior researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, recounted in chilling detail how government had mistreated them and what it was like to go through the legal ordeal. The event ended with an emotional and passionate call to end the China Initiative from Ms. Hong Peng, whose husband Prof Tao at Kansas University is awaiting trial set in March 2022.

I. UCA Protest Outside DOJ:
After a series of setbacks, an embarrassed U.S. Department of Justice is having some real headaches with its “China Initiative,” which is facing an uncertain future, likely to be eviscerated or revamped. This is largely due to the relentless joint efforts of people from all walks of life in the United States and the Chinese American community. At this critical moment, UCA will organize a silent protest outside the Department of Justice building against the unfair treatment and discrimination of Chinese scientists by the law enforcement.
We look forward to the participation of Chinese friends in the Greater Washington D.C. Metro area and nearby regions. Please join us in the protest to show our active civil participation, to express our care for each other, and to seek justice, equal and fair treatment for all.

Applicants are required to submit a 2-5 minutes video of their talent show via a link to an online video site for initial review of the Contest’s selection committee.
The event will be presented by UCA, co-hosted by Ding Ding TV and produced by “Bukaopu” Artists Salon. It will be live broadcasted online on February 12, 2022 (Sat) through Ding Ding TV, YouTube and an online/air broadcasting network of our local/national media partners, reaching millions of audiences globally.
The talent show contest prizes include the Best Act of the Year (1 winner, $3K), Best Musical Act (1 winner, $1K), Best Dance Act (1 winner, $1K), Best Singer (male) (1 winner, $500), Best Singer (female) (1 winner, $500), Best Variety Act (Including but not limited to Magic, Juggling, Acrobatics and any other form of performance art, 1 winner, $500) and Chinese Culture Award (3 winners, $500 each). The winners will be selected by our panel of judges based on their scores in five categories, originality, artistic merit, technical prowess, presentation, and representation of Chinese culture. Director’s Choice Awards (9 winners, $200 each) will be given to acts of exceptional quality chosen by the director to be included in the 2022 Online Spring Festival Gala Live-stream.
Audiences will have the opportunity to vote for their most favorite act on the web. The act receiving the most votes will win the Audience Choice the Most Popular Performer Award and $3000 cash.

The names of the award winners will be announced on Feb 12, 2022, and the winners’ prizes and certificates will be mailed out to the winners no later than Feb 20, 2022. All participants of the contest will receive participation certificates and NFT issued by Melos.Studio.

The United Chinese Americans (UCA) is a coalition of grass-root community organizations dedicated to the enrichment and empowerment of the Chinese American community in the United States. UCA was formed at the first Chinese American Convention in September 2016 and was later incorporated and received IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2017. UCA has since grown into a national federation of 12 local chapters in Atlanta, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, New York City and San Francisco and over 30 community partners nationwide.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans have been steadily increasing during the pandemic. The conversation of the event focused on this anti-Asian hate and racism and how some news and internet contents might cause misunderstanding and exacerbated poor relationships between Asian American communities and African American, or Black, communities.
The dialogue honed in on the following touch points:
Guest speakers included Chairman of Civic Leadership USA Sandy Chau, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco London Breed, California Assembly Member Alex Lee, Associate Professor of Afro-American and African Studies at the University of Michigan Stephen Ward, and Chairman at Kenson Ventures LLC Ken Fong. Other panelists included the San Francisco Planning Department and Commission’s Gerald Green, President of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce Carl Chan, Council Member of the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center Kim Sherobbi, President of the American Society of Engineers (ASEI) and SVP, SpringML Piyush Malik, and Managing Director at Anderson and Associates Alex Anderson.
The event was virtual and held by Ding Ding TV, a Silicon Valley media company.
