On May 6th, 1882, the United States passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, a legislation that was aimed at prohibiting Chinese immigrants from entering the country on the basis of their ethnicity. The act was a direct result of the growing anti-Chinese sentiment that was prevalent in the country at the time, and it marked the first time in U.S history that the government had passed a law specifically targeting a particular ethnic group.

Today, as we look back on the history surrounding the Chinese Exclusion Act, it serves as a reminder of the dangers of allowing xenophobia and racism to take hold within our society. The act was an unjust and discriminatory measure that caused significant harm to the Chinese-American community for decades, impacting their ability to immigrate, find work, and integrate into American society.

As we reflect on the anniversary of this shameful legislation, it’s important that we take a moment to recognize the ongoing struggles that many immigrant communities still experience today. From anti-immigrant rhetoric to policies that seek to limit immigration to this country, we cannot let history repeat itself and allow fear and hatred to take hold once again.

By opposing the repetition of history, we can work towards creating a society that values diversity, understanding, and acceptance. It’s up to all of us to raise our voices and speak out against racism and discrimination wherever we see it, and to work towards a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
