自从2020年新冠疫情开始，整个世界便陷入了动荡不安，去年亚城水疗中心枪击事件发生后，美国各种针对亚裔的暴力事件频发，今年爆发的乌俄战争更是雪上加霜……

各种媒体上负面新闻层出不穷，当看到暴力场面、人员伤亡的场景时，你会选择立即切换频道，“保护”孩子的情绪？还是趁机表达自己强烈的价值观，试图“教育”孩子谁才是“正义”的一方？

想要保护孩子免受可怕事物的伤害是很自然的，但“拔掉电源”并不能阻止孩子了解外面的世界，作为父母，我们需要了解该如何与孩子讨论关于战争的话题，以及如何应对日常生活中的暴力、创伤……

UCA《天籁云端》“不靠谱”线上春节联欢及北美华人原创达人秀大赛将于2022年2月12日星期六面对全球观众直播

由美国华人联合会（UCA) 、“不靠谱”艺术家沙龙与丁丁电视联合主办的UCA《天籁云端》“不靠谱”线上春节联欢及北美华人原创达人秀大赛已经开始征集表演节目，欢迎以来自北美地区和世界各地、具有表演天赋的华人和友人踊跃报名参赛！获奖节目可获得NFT数字藏品、获奖证书以及最高三千美元的现金奖金。

参赛年龄不限、节目形式不限，可以是音乐、舞蹈、魔术、喜剧等多种表演艺术形式，时长3~5分钟。获奖节目将参加2022年2月12日星期六的UCA《天籁云端》“不靠谱”线上春节联欢及北美华人原创达人秀大赛颁奖典礼，并通过线上频道面对全球观众直播。

这场以线上颁奖典礼的形式亮相的线上春节联欢会将把选自各地华裔达人们最精彩的节目表演呈现给遍布在北美以及全球各地的华人观众以及对中国文化感兴趣的各国朋友们。借新春佳节之际，在UCA的带领下，通过Ding ding TV的媒体平台，以“不靠谱”的方式把一系列接地气，带有中国文化代表性并且富有艺术价值的节目分享给所有海外侨胞们，让遍布全球的炎黄子孙们可以共度新春！

UCA《天籁云端》 “不靠谱”线上春节联欢及北美华人原创达人秀大赛的奖项包括：

年度最佳表演奖1 名3000 美元，最佳音乐奖1 名1000 美元，最佳舞蹈表演奖1 名1000 美元，最佳歌手（男）奖500 美元，最佳歌手（女）奖1 名500 美元，最佳综艺奖（包括但不限于魔术、杂耍、杂技和任何其他形式的表演艺术）1 名500 美元，中华文化奖3 名每人 500 美元，导演评选奖9 名每人 200 美元。获奖者将由特邀专家评审团根据表演的原创性、艺术价值、技术实力、表演效果及中华文化代表性等方面的总评分选出。

活动主办方同时还将安排网上投票“海选”环节，开放给观众评选“最受欢迎”（最佳人气）奖，获奖者将可获得3000美元的奖金！

Help Combat the Coronavirus in and Around our Homes

Washington, DC (April 10, 2020) – United Chinese Americans (UCA) proudly announces the publication of an educational series for families: “COVID-19: Tracy’s Guide for Families” (the “Guide”) on its website https://ucausa.org/tracys-guide-on-covid-19/ (official blog: tracysguide.blogspot.com). The Guide is a running online series aimed to provide useful knowledge and tips for protecting our loved ones and our home as we work together to “flatten the curve”.  As more than 80 percent of Americans are now under stay-at-home orders, learning how to take care of our homes and protect family members is a critical part of the national effort to control the pandemic.  In this Guide, UCA is gathering valuable experiences from Chinese-speaking regions that are recovering from the COVID-19 epidemic, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, so their hard lessons-learned can be shared with the rest of the world.

Materials in the guide are collated and distilled from the official medical guidelines, prevention books, and published materials, from China and other regions, then adopted into English literature based on American custom by freelance writers, translators and artists. They are also cross-checked and referenced, and combined with those from CDC and various state public health departments, with an aim to bring out these contents to American families and communities in a timely fashion. The guide is the product of teamwork and collaborative effort by more than 40 volunteers and UCA members, both in the US and China. Many of them are healthcare professionals, biomedical scientists, and medical doctors involved in fighting the COVID-19 pandemics since the beginning.

Through a factitious character named “Ms. Tracy”, the key steps in COVID-19 prevention, how to disinfect common household items and areas such as kitchen and bathroom, and how to take care of the sick, are addressed by a lively question-and-answer dialog fashion. The materials are specially organized and illustrated to make it easy to understand, attractive to children, and relatable to the general public. More than 40 articles will be forthcoming, addressing questions and providing know-how in the most commonly encountered situations at home and in community settings.

UCA and its members have been actively engaged in the relief effort and public health education since the beginning of the pandemics in China.  “Projects like “Tracy’s Guide for Families” to contribute to the fight, initiated and organized by UCA volunteers, are happening in every city and township in America.” commented by UCA President, Haipei Shue. “This is the time for us to work together, to put aside our biases on race, politics, religions, or anything that could divide us. The war against COVID-19 pandemic is a global one. People all over the world must work together side by side to win it at the end!”

此起彼伏的哨声哀悼一盏亮光的熄灭，也回应着李先生用生命向我们传递的信息：每个平凡人都可以有的英雄一面，一盏亮光的熄灭点燃了千千万万的亮光。
「恢复以后还是要上一线」，他去世前仍在告诉《南方都市报》，「疫情还在扩散，不想当逃兵」。本月初在接受《纽约时报》采访时，他说，信息透明公开是关键；举目四望，「吹哨人」一再成为当下这个时代的平凡英雄，世界各地媒体纷纷发布了对纪念的报道。

疫情揪心，当下有几个北美华人最关心的重要话题：（一）检测准确性差强人意，病毒传染性超人预期，民众呼吁更严格的隔离和限行政策；（二）来自本地社会对于华人的心理排斥甚至种族羞辱，该如何应对；（三）该以怎样的方式支援国内的抗御，捐款捐物之外，官方和科研机构之间的合作推进得怎么样了？

签名活动也有好几个在转，有提名李医生诺贝尔和平奖的，有加拿大华人联名要求暂停一切中国航班的，有抗议《华尔街日报》等媒体辱华的……树欲静而风不止，但我们坚持立足于人性和人类的立场，大抵就不会错。

不可捉摸的病情发展

到底能不能「人传人」目前仍然没有明确定论，还不能保证「无症状就不传染」，两周的隔离期过了，但是感染曲线的趋势仍然高斜率攀升，拐点不知道何时到来？新近爆出的几个消息，让人更加心神不宁。

首先是病情反复。李医生在去世之前，曾经有过转阴，但在痊愈过程中忽然恶化，并导致全身器官衰竭。大家忧心忡忡地发现，这并不是个案，而是多次发生了类似情况。
有人举了乙肝的例子，这种极其刁顽的病毒能欺骗人体的免疫系统，让人体不产生抗体，这样病毒在体内长期存在，表面抗原转阴，显示「小三阳」了，但人体免疫力一旦下降，可能会忽然发展成「大三阳」而爆发。当下这种冠状病毒，就有类似的潜伏特征，所以斗争是防范是长期的。
其次是检测准确度问题。现有的医疗检测手段不够完美，再加上病毒感染存在潜伏期，导致存在本来检测结果阴性的人过了几天再测成了阳性，在这期间存在着已经不知不觉传播给他人的危险。因此有医生呼吁，不能光靠核酸检测试剂，必须上CT全面检查，肺部的白化等改变是最直观的感染特征。

加拿大华社呼吁暂停对华航班


此次肺炎不像非典那样有明显的发热特征，使得公共场合设置的体温检测几乎毫无用处，很多时候只能依靠自觉。但很多时候患者自己都不知道被感染，甚至初次检测筛查都查不出来，就像加拿大的一例确诊的女性患者，她本来是检测阴性的，但是她很小心，就在家主动自我隔离，结果再测原来真的有病毒。然而，不能期待每个人都这样为他人着想，甚至有的人还故意隐瞒自己的行迹。
加拿大从武汉撤侨的两架专机星期五先后降落在安大略省的Trenton军事基地，机总共上载有两百多人。到达后，所有乘客都接受了医学检查，然后将在基地的住所被观察两周，以确保他们没有感染病毒。
这个做法跟美国的撤侨类似，但是美国除此之外还拒绝过去两周内经停过中国的任何旅客入境，只有美国公民和绿卡持有者例外，而加拿大就没有这样的旅行禁令，这使民航反而成为一个潜在的薄弱环节，尤其是有的人选择先逃离中国、在加拿大停留，直到允许入境美国。
一些加拿大华人认为，过去几周来，数百万武汉人逃离该市遍布各地，最终使得全国许多人在不知情的人情况下感染和旅行，也有的人甚至故意隐瞒自己的病情。加之检测手段不完备、不可靠，而病毒又具有高度的传染性，在这样的综合考虑前提下，应该谨慎为上，暂停接纳所有从中国来的航班。
目前，世界上许多国家实行了对华的旅行限令，上万航班都被取消，这些举措并非针对华人，不应该解释为种族主义。也有世界卫生组织的专家认为，旅行限令不一定能奏效。

华人反对主流媒体的辱华用语

一篇来自《华尔街日报》的署名文章有蹭热点的标题党之嫌，它的内容是关于经济问题，但是标题让华人感到非常受​冒犯，并勾起关于排华法案的痛苦回忆。有华人发起了抗议签名​，活动的介绍页说：使用这种具有种族歧视性的标题，表明《华尔街日报》编辑审稿的傲慢和判断，对无辜的中国公民的类似言论只会助长种族主义，并对中国或其他亚洲种族产生负面影响。签名要求该报道歉、撤稿或者更正标题。

这种说法确实有「伤口撒盐」的感觉，但另一方面，这个词在英语和汉语语境里的意味并不太一致，我们经历的屈辱教育和跟这个词关联的耻感，是讲英语的人感受不到的，因此，尽管媒体也曾把英国、意大利叫做「欧洲病夫」，但效果确实不同。不过，这个题目跟严重程度是否可以跟「中国病毒」这样的说法​相比呢？

华人经历过系统性的种族歧视，社会集体潜意识里还存在着对于华人和中国的负面成见，带有地域性歧视的说法或蔑称，容易唤醒这些沉睡的潜意识。如今在多地的民间都发生了骚扰中餐馆、辱骂华人甚至动手袭击的事件，就是这种仇外心理的发酵。

该报今天发布了一篇简短的读者来信，文中说，「在千万华人不幸感染冠状病毒的关键时刻，这一标题勾起了1840年鸦片战争中国人民的惨痛记忆。我尊重宪法第一修正案，但在文明社会中，我们不应容忍在人类共同的大敌当前时诉诸这种歧视性言论。」

瘟疫有两个维度：一个是卫生的维度，作为公众卫生事件，以卫生防疫的大局为攸关的利益；一个是种族关系的维度，​针对社会舆论偏见需要警惕和斗争。但这两个维度不必混为一谈，有些卫生安全的举措不必从种族主义角度过分解读。

Our hats off to those at MIT who together have made it possible. To the members of the MIT community,

MIT has flourished, like the United States itself, because it has been a magnet for the world’s finest talent, a global laboratory where people from every culture and background inspire each other and invent the future, together.

Today, I feel compelled to share my dismay about some circumstances painfully relevant to our fellow MIT community members of Chinese descent. And I believe that because we treasure them as friends and colleagues, their situation and its larger national context should concern us all.

The situation
As the US and China have struggled with rising tensions, the US government has raised serious concerns about incidents of alleged academic espionage conducted by individuals through what is widely understood as a systematic effort of the Chinese government to acquire high-tech IP.

As head of an institute that includes MIT Lincoln Laboratory, I could not take national security more seriously. I am well aware of the risks of academic espionage, and MIT has established prudent policies to protect against such breaches.

But in managing these risks, we must take great care not to create a toxic atmosphere of unfounded suspicion and fear. Looking at cases across the nation, small numbers of researchers of Chinese background may indeed have acted in bad faith, but they are the exception and very far from the rule. Yet faculty members, post-docs, research staff and students tell me that, in their dealings with government agencies, they now feel unfairly scrutinized, stigmatized and on edge – because of their Chinese ethnicity alone.

Nothing could be further from – or more corrosive to – our community’s collaborative strength and open-hearted ideals. To hear such reports from Chinese and Chinese-American colleagues is heartbreaking. As scholars, teachers, mentors, inventors and entrepreneurs, they have been not only exemplary members of our community but exceptional contributors to American society. I am deeply troubled that they feel themselves repaid with generalized mistrust and disrespect.

The signal to the world
For those of us who know firsthand the immense value of MIT’s global community and of the free flow of scientific ideas, it is important to understand the distress of these colleagues as part of an increasingly loud signal the US is sending to the world.

Protracted visa delays. Harsh rhetoric against most immigrants and a range of other groups, because of religion, race, ethnicity or national origin. Together, such actions and policies have turned the volume all the way up on the message that the US is closing the door – that we no longer seek to be a magnet for the world’s most driven and creative individuals. I believe this message is not consistent with how America has succeeded. I am certain it is not how the Institute has succeeded. And we should expect it to have serious long-term costs for the nation and for MIT.

For the record, let me say with warmth and enthusiasm to every member of MIT’s intensely global community: We are glad, proud and fortunate to have you with us! To our alumni around the world: We remain one community, united by our shared values and ideals! And to all the rising talent out there: If you are passionate about making a better world, and if you dream of joining our community, we welcome your creativity, we welcome your unstoppable energy and aspiration – and we hope you can find a way to join us.

In May, the world lost a brilliant creative force: architect I.M. Pei, MIT Class of 1940. Raised in Shanghai and Hong Kong, he came to the United States at 17 to seek an education. He left a legacy of iconic buildings from Boston to Paris and China to Washington, DC, as well as on our own campus. By his own account, he consciously stayed alive to his Chinese roots all his life. Yet, when he died at the age of 102, the Boston Globe described him as “the most prominent American architect of his generation.”

Thanks to the inspired American system that also made room for me as an immigrant, all of those facts can be true at the same time.

As I have discovered through 40 years in academia, the hidden strength of a university is that every fall, it is refreshed by a new tide of students. I am equally convinced that part of the genius of America is that it is continually refreshed by immigration – by the passionate energy, audacity, ingenuity and drive of people hungry for a better life.

There is certainly room for a wide range of serious positions on the actions necessary to ensure our national security and to manage and improve our nation’s immigration system. But above the noise of the current moment, the signal I believe we should be sending, loud and clear, is that the story of American immigration is essential to understanding how the US became, and remains, optimistic, open-minded, innovative and prosperous – a story of never-ending renewal.

In a nation like ours, immigration is a kind of oxygen, each fresh wave reenergizing the body as a whole. As a society, when we offer immigrants the gift of opportunity, we receive in return vital fuel for our shared future. I trust that this wisdom will always guide us in the life and work of MIT. And I hope it can continue to guide our nation.

President Barbara R. Snyder and Provost Ben Vinson III issued an email stating that “[d]iversity is a core value at Case Western Reserve. Yale’s steadfast commitment to our international students and scholars

University President Peter Salovey issued a statement about “tensions in United States–China relations and increased scrutiny of academic exchanges have added to a sense of unease among many international students and scholars here at Yale and at universities across the country.”  

The statement concludes that “I will continue to advocate for government policies that support the ability of international students and scholars to study and work in the United States. Openness—a key to the extraordinary success of America’s great research universities—must remain a hallmark of Yale.”

The message states that “Blanket generalizations regarding any group are dangerous, and risk leading to racial

profiling and other forms of discrimination. Indeed, such discrimination has been felt more broadly by those of Asian descent, whether immigrants or not. On our campus, discrimination on the basis of citizenship, national origin or race is a clear violation of our policies. When members of our community with international backgrounds face obstacles to their freedom of movement or work, we will seek to support them. And while recognizing there are important issues that must be addressed in international relations, we will advocate forcefully for the openness of our country and institutions of higher education for both learning and research.”

“Sherry Chen is a hero” C100 Chairman Frank Wu on Sherry’s perseverance in her 6 year-long fight for justice. C100 hosted a press conference for Sherry in Silicon Valley on Friday, May 4. UCA president Haipei Shue was also invited to speak at the press conference. In the evening, Sherry and her husband attended dinner with a dozens of long time supporters hosted by the United Chinese Americans. Next morning, president Shue introduced Sherry to the honorable Gary Locke at the C100 annual conference. The former secretary of commerce promised Sherry that he will contact Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and suggest the Department of Commerce not to appeal the MSPD ruling in favor of Sherry.
