Curriculum Advocacy – New York
Although the New York State Legislature has not yet officially passed the proposed AAPI Curriculum bills, Senate Bill S6359A and Assembly Bill A7260A, the New York State Education Department has led meaningful work in this area. Most notably, in May 2022, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York State Senator John Liu announced that the city’s Department of Education would be introducing a pilot curriculum that will teach students about the history and culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) starting in fall 2022. This curriculum will be rolld out to all New York City public schools in fall 2023 and later to the entire state.
On 4/23/2021. State Senator John C. Liu introduced Senate Bill S6359A that
“requires public elementary and high schools to provide instruction in Asian American history and civic impact”. The bill has been assigned to the Senate Education Committee.
