Curriculum Advocacy - New Jersey

On Jan.18, 2022, Governor Phil Murphy signed the AAPI Curriculum bill S4021 and the Commission on Asian American Heritage in the Department of Education bill S3764 into law! Prior to the signing, on Jan.10, 2022, both bills passed unanimously in the State Senate (39-0) and in the State Assembly (78-0)!

Senate Bill S4021 was introduced by State Senator Vin Gopal on 6/21/2021. The bill is titled “An act concerning instruction on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in public schools and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.” It “requires school districts to provide instruction on history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as part of implementation of New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies.” The bill has gained wide bipartisan support.
